Sonata for Violin and Piano
Moderato – Adagio – Allegro moderato
1971
0:14:00
Vln, Pno
Sonata for Violin is the most strictly twelve-tone work in the composer’s output. The piece also makes use of the compositional technique of isorhythm. The three movements are moderate, slow, and fast, all three characterized by long sweeping melodies.
The sonata was originally written for viola and piano in 1971. It was commissioned by Yiannis Vatikiotis, principal violist, Athens Symphony Orchestra, Greece. He premiered the piece in the following year. The piece was revised in 1977, including a version for cello and piano and for violin and piano. The latter version was premiered by the composer the same year.
