Moto Perpetuo for Marimba Alone

2013

Marimba

The work Moto Perpetuo is written in the manner of the Moto Perpetuo by Paganini. Like the latter, it is a virtuoso piece, and it composed only for the very best performers of the instrument. Dynamics and octave displacements are used in abundance to portray depth and coloring. This work is written for my colleague at Louisiana State University percussion professor and composer, Brett Dietz.

It was premiered at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York on November 24, 2013. The music critic Jeffrey Williams of New York Concert Review raved, “Brett Dietz displayed his amazing dexterity with his stick technique in the Moto Perpetuo for Marimba Alone, LRC 263 (another World Premiere)—it was a performance worthy of Paganini!”
